Keeping Stillness Within (part 2): Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice rooted in present-moment awareness, and it can have a profound impact on your ability to cultivate and maintain a deep sense of inner stillness.

Previously when we looked at awareness as a doorway into inner stillness, we touched on some mindfulness techniques which I hope you have already taken some time to explore for yourself. In this post we will look at some of the benefits of mindfulness, some tips, and practical ways for you to incorporate it into your day.

Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally paying attention to the present moment with non-judgmental awareness. It involves bringing your full attention to the present, observing your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and the environment without getting caught up in them. Mindfulness invites you to embrace the present moment as it unfolds, without attachment and without resistance.

Let’s look at some specific areas where mindfulness not only promotes stillness, but has wonderful benefits to your overall well-being:

  • Stress Reduction: By cultivating mindfulness, you develop the ability to better identify and observe the situations which cause stress in your life. You can find more resourceful ways to respond to them, allowing you to stay calm and build resilience.

  • Emotional Balance: Mindfulness enhances your capacity to recognise and regulate your emotions. It helps create space to develop emotional balance and greatly reduces the tendency to react emotionally.

  • Self-Awareness: Through mindfulness, you can experience a deeper understanding of your thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behaviour. This helps you to develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion.

  • Concentration & Focus: Regular mindfulness practice increases your ability to maintain focused attention and resist distractions. It helps to improve your concentration and focus in all aspects of life.

  • Inner Stillness: Mindfulness helps create a calm and centred state of mind, which brings stillness and a sense of tranquillity.

Incorporating Mindfulness into Your Daily Life: Here are five practical suggestions for cultivating and maintaining mindfulness throughout your day:

1. Everyday Mindfulness: Bring mindfulness into your daily activities. Whether it's brushing your teeth, walking, gardening, or washing dishes, engage fully in the present moment, focusing on the sensory experience of the task at hand.

2. Mindful Breathing: Throughout the day, take moments to bring your attention to your breath. Observe the sensation of each inhale and exhale, anchoring yourself in the present moment.

3. Body Scan: Conduct a body scan practice, starting from the top of your head and moving down to your toes. Notice any sensations, tension, or areas of relaxation in each part of your body.

4. Mindful Eating: Engage in mindful eating by fully savouring each bite of food. Pay attention to the taste, texture, and sensations that arise as you eat, allowing yourself to be fully present in the experience.

5. Formal Meditation: Set aside dedicated time each day for formal meditation practice. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and bring your attention to the present moment, focusing on your breath, bodily sensations, or a chosen object of meditation.


Start Small - Begin with short periods of mindfulness practice and gradually increase the duration over time. Even a few minutes of focused awareness can have a significant impact.

Reminders - Set reminders throughout the day to pause and bring your attention to the present moment. These can be alarms, sticky notes, or mindful reminders set on your phone.

Non-Judgment - Practice observing your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations without judgment or attachment. Cultivate an attitude of curiosity and acceptance towards all of your experiences.

Relationships - Bring mindfulness into your interactions with everyone you meet. Practice active listening, being fully present in conversations, and cultivating empathy and understanding.

Facing Challenges - In moments of difficulty, stress, or anxiety, bring mindful awareness to each situation. Observe your thoughts and emotions with kindness and compassion, and practice allowing them to come and go without judgment.

Mindfulness is a transformative practice that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. It creates a solid foundation for inner stillness as well as a more relaxed and fulfilling experience of life.
